Aussie Tennis Player Knocks Off World Number One
What a win!
Aussie Daria Gavrilova has pulled off a stunning upset at the Hong Kong Open, taking down world number one Angelique Kerber in straight sets.
Gavrilova — nicknamed “Dasher” and ranked 38th in the world — won her quarter-final bout with Kerber 6-3, 6-1 in 73 minutes.
The Russian-born 22-year-old broke Kerber’s serve six times in her comprehensive win, leaving the German’s number one ranking under threat.
Kerber surged to the top of the rankings this year after winning the Australian and US Opens. She also made the Wimbledon final.
Gavrilova will play Kristina Mladenovic of France in the semi-final.
