Alicia Coutts Second, Stephanie Rice Fourth In The 200-Metre Individual Medley
Australians Alicia Coutts and Stephanie Rice couldn't stop Chinese sensation Ye Shiwen from winning the 200-metre individual medley.
Australian Alicia Coutts produced a brilliant performance to claim the silver medal behind Chinese sensation Ye Shiwen in the Olympic 200m individual medley final.
It was Coutts' third medal in London after winning gold as part of the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team and taking bronze in the 100m butterfly.
She clocked two minutes and 8.15 seconds and stayed with the winner for all but the late stage as Ye set an Olympic record of 2:07.57.
American Caitlin Leverenz (2:08.95) was third while Australia's defending champion Stephanie Rice (2:09.55) was fourth in a gallant performance following a disrupted preparation.
Ye, 16, continued her spectacular meet as she stole another Olympic title from Rice.
She also broke Rice's 400IM world record on the opening night.
Coutts is Australia's swimmer of the meet so far and she matched her total medal haul at last year's world titles in Shanghai.
She is likely to get a chance to add a fourth medal in the 4x100m medley relay later in the meet.
Channel Nine commentator Grant Hackett says Rice will now need to undergo a shoulder reconstruction.
