Australian James Magnussen has qualified for the final of the 100-metre freestyle after winning his semi-final on Wednesday morning (AEST).

Magnussen clocked 47.63, which was 0.4 seconds better than his leg in the unsuccessful Australian 4 x 100-metre relay final.

The Australian's time was the fastest in both semi-finals.

Compatriot James Roberts clocked 48.57 and finished sixth in the same semi-final as Magnussen, but will miss out on the final.

Magnussen will swim for gold on Thursday morning, Australian time (5:20am AEST).

In other great news for Australia, Bronte Barratt won the bronze medal in the women's 200m freestyle soon after Magnussen's great swim.

American Allison Schmitt claimed the gold medal in an Olympic record time of one minute 53.61 seconds, while Camille Muffat from France won the silver.

But swimming legend Michael Phelps will be ruing a poor finish as he failed to win the 200-metre butterfly for the third straight Games.

Phelps moved within one medal of becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time but had to settle for silver.

The American superstar clocked one minute and 1.53.01 seconds but was caught in the final metres by surprise winner Chad le Clos (1:52.96) of South Africa. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda was third in 1:53.21.

Phelps drew level with the 18 medals won by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, and could surpass the mark later in the men's 4x200m freestyle final.

It is Phelps' second medal in London after he also earned a silver in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday.

Phelps, 27, now has 14 gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
