James O'Connor has told Triple M he is looking forward to the responsibility of the 10 jersey as he returns to the field after rupturing his liver.

"I enjoy it [responsibility]. Kurtley plays well at 10 but his position is 15. Going to link up pretty well. I don't want to take too much away from him. He's a natural freak and he'll do what he wants on the field," O'Connor told Triple M Melbourne's The Rush Hour.

O'Connor, who lacerated his liver after taking a knee in the chest from fellow Wallaby Berrick Barnes back in April, has spent the last 8 weeks on the sidelines.

"Liver's all healed and hamstring came up all right. It's been a good eight weeks, four weeks of playing a bit of Fifa," O'Connor said of his time out.

O'Connor admitted the Rebels start to the Super Rugby season wasn't perfect.

"It was a pretty slow start to the season. There's a new group in the Rebel outfit and it's coming together well," the 21 year-old said.

"After the June tests, these last three games could be hopefully wins," O'Connor added.

Rebels coach Damien Hill named O'Connor to play alongside Stirling Mortlock and Michael Lipman who will play their final home game of their careers against the Reds.

"It's massive, he's done so many big things for the game," O'Connor said of Mortlock's home farewell.
