Nathan Bock Suspended Indefinitely
Triple M Adelaide 7 April, 2009 - 8:41 AM
Updated 17 April:
Nathan Bock's 'indefinite' suspension proved to be shortlived, with the Crows rushing their All-Australian defender back into the side after just a week on the sidelines. Have they made the right decision, or is he coming back too soon?
Updated 15 April:
A week has expired since Nathan Bock was suspended by the Crows, and we want to know...should he come straight back into the team having served a week's suspension? He thinks he's ready....do you agree?
Original post:
Star Crows defender Nathan Bock has been suspended indefinitely from playing following his admission to a drunken incident that led to his arrest for assaulting his girlfriend.
The AFL worked together with Adelaide to react decisively to charges against Bock, with the AFL's new personal conduct policy enacted for the first time. Bock was fined $5000, will have counselling and will attend a family violence men's behaviour program, in addition to attending 50 hours of community service.
Last year's Best & Fairestr winner for the Crows has apologised to his partner, Carlie Matthews, and said he was "deeply disappointed" by the behaviour he described as "out of character for me".
Bock's statement said, in part: "Firstly and foremost, I deeply regret my actions on Saturday night and wish to apologise to my girlfriend Carlie, and to her family for any embarrassment and hurt I have caused them.
"I am deeply disappointed in my behaviour and acknowledge the fact that as an Adelaide Football Club player, we are looked upon as role models in the community and I will endeavour to regain any respect I have lost.
"It is out of character for me, and I accept the fact that I need to do some work in the areas of managing my behaviour when drinking, to ensure that I don't get myself in this type of position again."
Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg described Bock's actions as a "monumental blue".
Fellow Adelaide players, Scott Thompson and Graham Johncock, have been arrested in the past for serious traffic offences, while the club captain, Simon Goodwin, was fined $40,000 by the AFL for gambling on AFL matches. Rivals Port has dealt with two separate assault charges and subsequent court appearances by ruckman Dean Brogan.
Bock will appear in court later this year.
Are footballers out of control?
Should Adelaide have suspended him 'indefinitely'?

Of course it's the right move....you Crows jokers seem to think your players can do anything and get away with it with it all being made hush hush!! First to gripe when it's a player from another team!!

it's a shame to see such a great player brought so low. it'll be interesting to see what adelaide do with him - will they bring him back as soon as they desperately need him, or does 'indefinite' mean until the smoke blows over?

Who do these AFL players think they are treating their girlfriends like this. The sad thing is these girls stay with them.

Yes, the crows made the right decision. Ultimately it has shown once again that footy players are just human like everyone else. I do not and would not ever condone what Bock did. However it seems to be that we as the public forget they are human like everyone else and they make mistakes, bad decisions and fall just like everyone else, the one thing that could come from this hopefully is that Bock shows that you have to take responsibilty for your actions and learn from them and take whatever consequences may come to you, whatever they may be.

It was blown up by the media to a point that he has now been labelled dangerous and he to go through with this sham and get the truth as to what transpired.

This is the AFL putting pressure on clubs to do the right thing - what is right? - Fine him $5000, suspend him and treat him like a rapist or murderer. Are the AFL above being judge and jury? He made a mistake and lost it for what ever reason - haven't we all at some stage, perhaps the whole community should seek anger management. If he is such a bad person lock him up instead - come on deal with it and move on, but don't treat him like a common criminal.

I really couldn't give a rats toss about him being suspended - AFL is a stupid game and all the players are morons! The game and its players should all be suspended indefinitely!
I just cannot believe the amount of media coverage has been given to this story! What a slow news week!

The media should leave Nathan alone now, i think he has learnt his lesson,it was a silly thing to do, hope his girlfriend can find it in her heart to forgive him, i am sure he is feeling awful. I think Nathan should be back in the CROWS line up this week, we need him he is a good player.
