AC/DC Win Two ARIAs Posted by Eddie Ruckus - Rockin' Blogger 27 November, 2009 - 7:45 AM

AC/DC broke one of the longest and most inexplicable voodoos in Australian music last night by taking home their first ever ARIA Awards.

Acca Dacca took out two prizes, for best rock album, as well as highest-selling album of the year for Black Ice.

The band weren’t personally on hand at the ceremony in Sydney last night to accept the awards – actually, they haven’t attended any awards ceremony since about 1974 – but thanked fans via a prerecorded message from backstage at their show in Sao Paulo in Brazil.

“This is very kind,” said Brian Johnson. “Thanks very much.” Then Angus Young muttered something under his breath which was indecipherable to viewers at home but absolutely cracked up the rest of the band. Cheeky little bugger!

No one has been able to explain why AC/DC has never even been nominated for an ARIA before, let alone won a couple. However, the band was one of the first acts to be inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame when it was opened in 1988.

Last night’s biggest winners were The Empire Of Sun who took out four of the major categories.

2009 ARIA Winners

Album of the Year: Empire of the Sun, Walking on a Dream
Single of the Year: Empire of the Sun, “Walking on a Dream”
Best Group: Empire of the Sun
Best Female Artist: Sarah Blasko
Best Male Artist: Daniel Merriweather
Best Rock Album: AC/DC, Black Ice
Best Pop Release: Empire of the Sun, “Walking on a Dream”
Highest Selling Single: Jessica Mauboy, “Running Back”
Highest Selling Album: AC/DC, Black Ice

Apart from AC/DC all the rest were a bunch of nancys. Seriously, one of the weakest years of Aussie music ever.

AC/DC haven't lived here for 30 years. How are they even still considered Australian? The ARIA's was good for all the new bands, but we need some rockers like Silverchair and Powderfinger.

ARGHHHHHH, GODDAMN EMPIRE OF THE SUN? Best Group, Best Album, Best Single? I thought the ARIAs were all about awarding the most outstanding artists in Australian music - not those who should be shot for crimes against 'music'.

This shows yet again that the ARIAs have a long hisotry of giving awards to bands that don't deserve them.

Then again, I should be somewhat happy Empire of the Sun won. They now give hope to hundreds of wannabe musicians with no talent - and who dress in a way that would make a transgender prostitute blush - hope that they can make it.

The tossers that call themselves Empire of the Sun are an embarrassment to real musicians everywhere. F the ARIAS for yet another screw-up.

I'm still in shock at the fact that AC/DC have never ever been nominated for an ARIA award - considering their first six albums are absolute classics!

Well done boys. Bring on the Black Ice tour.
