Living End’s Song Of The Year Post by: Eddie Ruckus - Rockin' Blogger 24 June, 2009 - 7:29 AM

The Living End walked away from last night’s APRA songwriting awards in Melbourne with the prestigious song of the year award for “White Noise”.

Unbelievably, it was the first time in The Living End’s 15-year career that songwriter Chris Cheney had even been nominated for a prize.

But all was forgiven last night when Australia’s 14,000 registered songwriters voted “White Noise” as the best Australian song released in 2008.

Cheney said the song took him forever to write and was “the bastard child born out of the ruins of two other songs – writing it proved to be a great learning experience for me.” [Mummy, what’s a bastard?]

Other winners at last night's gala event included The Presets, who were named songwriters of the year, and AC/DC, who took out the award for most performed Australian song overseas [on radio, etc] in 2008.

Guess which song won AC/DC the award? No, no – not “Rock & Roll Train”. The most performed Australian song overseas in 2008 was the 30-year-old “Highway To Hell”. Proving once again, you can't beat an utter classic!!!

Did they get it right? Was “White Noise” the best Aussie song of 2008?

I reckon the best song of last year was 'Don't Fight It' by The Panics.

I know they're a bit obscure but these guys from WA have really got something. I heard one of their tracks on Home Brew and they reminded me of classic Australian bands like The Go-Betweens and The Triffids.

There is something really special about them.

I'm not surprised to hear that they're making inroads over in the UK.
