Silverchair Leave Rock Behind Post by: Chris E Leigh 25 May, 2010 - 10:21 AM
Silverchair's Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies say they're sick of 'faking it' and are ready to leave the sound they broke through with behind. The band opened up about their musical future at Maitland's Groovin' The Moo Festival, where they premiered brand new songs.
“We don’t want to get on stage and play old stuff that we wrote when we were fourteen years old and aren’t particularly excited about," Silverchair told Triple M's Radar Radio.
“We’ve always been harsh on ourselves to better ourselves and not just put out meat and three veg for the sake of it," Joannou continued. "We always like to challenge ourselves and challenge the people who listen to our music.”
“We’re a bit selfish when it comes to our setlist, purely because we think if we’re on stage and we’re committed to it and we’re passionate about it and not faking it, you’re being honest with yourself and honest with your fans.”
Before hitting the road for Groovin' The Moo, the band have been hard at work in the studio on their sixth as-yet-untitled album, reportedly due out later this year.
'The album is moving in a very different direction from anything we’ve recorded previously... everyday is a new surprise,' the band revealed on their official website.

I don't think it's fair on your fans to be so selfish and put out music that is entirely different to what got you fans in the first place.
Sure, bands evolve and will try out different things, but I think Silverchair 2010 is whole different genre to that of Silverchair's previous work.
I don't think it's even fair for them to call themselves Silverchair at all. This new direction should include a new name.

There is so much music out there, big deal if one little band changes their sound. Good for them! Better to challenge yourselves creatively then release the same album over and over again. If that's what you want - Nickelback, Metallica and Korn can help you out.
I think it's silly to expect a band to sound exactly the same for two decades. If they did, well that's just stale and boring!
There's no need for name changes, just go out and find something that better suits your current tastes!
