Sad news this morning with an official announcement that Silverchair will go into "indefinite hibernation" after nearly 20 years together.

In a joint statement from Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou on their official website last night they said they had not taken the decision lightly.

"We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then... if the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop.

"Therefore after much soul searching... we're putting Silverchair into "indefinite hibernation" and we've decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future."

While they refused to rule out a potential reunion in the future the band have definitely stopped for now.

Silverchair thanked fans for all their support over the years and hoped they would continue to support their new projects.

The news has left 'Chair fans devastated.

Triple M Sydney's Becko sensed something was up with the guys. "I'm not surprised with this announcement. We've all heard stories of how the [new album] has been going and what Daniel has been doing in his free time. I'm sure they will be back."

Jo Lynch from Triple M Brisbane said: "Devastated to hear of the break up [of Newcastle's greatest band]. I had such high hopes for them this year and couldn't wait for a new album.

"Silverchair will forever remain those 15-year-old kids rockin' "Israel's Son" at the Big Day Out - 'Put your hands in the air!'"

Triple M Melbourne's Dangerous Dave remembered what great musicians they were. "My favourite Silverchair show was in 2003 at The Palais in St Kilda, it was their The Across Night Tour.

"Half the show was Daniel Johns at the piano showing what a true musician he is, raw vocals and amazing on the piano. The second half of the show was guitars and the Marshalls turned right up. I miss those days of Silverchair."

Triple M Brisbane's Johnno agreed saying Silverchair were a rock band not afraid to push the boundaries.

"No Aussie band in recent memory made as many widely varied, but consistently brilliant albums," he said.

"Daniel Johns had a knack for turning obscure musical ideas into supreme rock songs. They were never scared to step outside the apparent boundaries of modern music, to create their own brand of indefinable music.

"They'll be sorely missed, not just as a rock band, but as leaders of Aussie music, and creators of some of Australia's finest songs."

Australian rock is now officially doomed. When bands like Gyroscope, Thirsty Merc and Eskimo Joe are the best we've got, then it's the beginning of the end.

I'm not saying they're bad per se, but they're definitely nowhere near world class, and don't deserve anywhere near the success silverchair achieved.

It's time for up and coming Aussie rock bands to step up! I hope you can help this cause Triple M!

Sad, sad news! I was so looking forward to their next album after the varied styles of their previous work.

I'm sure it's not the last we'll hear from the boys whether together or not.

    Thanks for the music guys!

first powderfinger, now silverchair. what a sad day in oz rock history. they were an amazing band. 3 young guys from newcastle doing what they do best and that's rocking out.

But all good things must end. hopefully they'll do a farewell tour as they deserve a big thanks. they're icons.

Sad to see the state of affairs in the music industry these days. I used to look forward to my favourite bands putting out a new CD. Now all the bands that I think this way about are calling it a day.

Thanks to Silverchair for all of the great music. Good luck to them in their future endeavours. Hopefully it will include them getting together for another great record. If not... cheers and good luck.
