It's time to get your flannelette shirts out because Seattle grunge legends Soundgarden are coming down under!

Yes, the band responsible for hits like "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" and who with Nirvana pretty much defined the grunge sound back in the nineties will be doing shows in Australia in 2011.

Our music reporter Nui Te Koha revealed all this morning. "Soundgarden will be here in 2011. Australian promoters are up at Lollapalooza in Chicago trying to lock down these dates but it will happen early this year."

When pressed for exact timings Nui said it will be, "January, February, March next year."

The grunge legends reunited recently at the Lollapalooza festival and they have a new compilation album coming out in September called Telephantasm, which contains one new song called "Black Rain".

Following the band's split in 1997 Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd have kept themselves busy with various projects.

Chris Cornell teamed up with members of Rage Against The Machine to front Audioslave and pursued a solo career that included some highs and lows (has anyone heard Chris Cornell's acoustic version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"?).

However, judging by their performance at the massive Lollapalooza festival in Chicago on the weekend Cornell is back doing what he does best - screaming over Kim Thayil's heavy metal riffs.

YEAH BABY! AWESOME! I just hope they don't do the Big Day Out. They would be a waste.

How awesome would it be to see them play songs off Badmotorfinger!

I was lucky enough to see Chris Cornell when he played a solo show in Melbourne a few years back (2007 I think). This is awesome news.

I agree with LaLa. A band like this is often wasted at festivals - (unless they do a sideshow).

Hmm, I wonder what venue they would play in Melbourne? Can't wait though.

I really hope this source is credible, it has got all the ozzie fans pumped!

BUT im a little bit worried, CHRIS CORNELL DIDN'T DO A FRENCH ALBUM, he had a french version of "Cant change me" on Euphoria Morning as the bonus track.

Yes Jasper you are absolutely right. I will now hang my head in shame and then listen to Soundgarden's killer Superunknown album for the rest of the day.

Oh my God!!!! Could this be true?
I regretably missed them last time they were in the country as I was out of Oz at the time, I have never forgiven my self for that one.
    Please let this be true....
I would give anything for a second chance of seeing the boys live...
    Long live Soundgarden...
    Please come to Newcastle xoxox

It was a 35 degree day and Festival hall was like a Sauna. One of the best gigs I have ever been to.
