U2 Promoter Opens Aussie Office Post by: Eddie Ruckus 20 April, 2010 - 7:06 AM

The world’s biggest concert promoter has announced plans to set up shop in Australia.

Live Nation – whose personal client list includes little known acts such as U2, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Nickelback – is set to open up its own offices in Melbourne.

More than just a traditional concert promoter, Live Nation has struck some of the biggest music deals of recent times.

In 2008, it signed a 12-year deal with U2 – rumoured to be worth well over $100 million – which saw Live Nation become the band’s exclusive international tour promoter.

This all means that Live Nation should now be the direct promoter of U2’s next Australian tour – whenever the hell that might be! – rather than licensing the act out to a local promoter.

What effect will this have on local concerts and ticket prices? It’s impossible to say, but there are many very vocal critics in other countries that say Live Nation – who this year merged with Ticketmaster – run their international tour business like a monopoly.

According to the company’s own stats, Live Nation in 2009 promoted 21,000 concerts around the world, selling 140 million tickets.

How much would you be willing to pay to see U2? $100? $200? $300?

I won't bother commenting on U2 but Live Nation setting up shop? I have a bad, bad feeling about this.

It shouldn't have too much of an impact on pricing. This tour overall has been very cheap because they sell every seat due to the 360 style stage which increases capacity to make up for the costs. Tickets have been from $50 through to $200 in other markets. B class on Vertigo tour was $130, A was $205 so who knows.

Rumours are being reported in the paper that they will be bringing 360 down under by year's end... hopefully MMM will find some more solid info soon as the rumours also hinted at an announcement soon... which would make sense i guess. best not to get ones hopes up though!

The "mole" info is U2 are looking at touring Aust and in Brisbane Nov/Dec 2010 and are looking at an alternative venue to their last gig at the "old" ANZ Stadium.

Anyone who went to their last Brisbane concert in 2006 will know why.

With only the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium left will be interesting to see which one??
