Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan took part in a Q&A session with Rolling Stone editor David Fricke and his fans on his new book, It's So Easy (And Other Lies).
Duff's new autobiography is a detailed look at his version of the whole Guns N' Roses story. He's the third band member to release a memoir on their dizzying rise to fame, and spectacular implosion.
On why he decided to put pen to paper, he says, "I'm reading all the time. Let me try writing some more words than a column. Let's see if I can write about my insanity. And then, I kept writing."
Duff was hesitant to do anything too earnest on the music creation process, "f**k that s**t," he laughed.
"I wrote about things like Steven [Adler] and I playing to Cameo records, and playing to Sly And The Family Stone, and listening to grooves," Duff explained.
"You can hear those grooves, especially in Appetite [For Destruction], you can the backbeat that Steven developed, that real groove. That's all from 70's, and Prince, and even the electronic drums of Cameo. But Prince's drumming on the first three records is ridiculous. it's sickening. And the guitar playing.
"I wasn't really a bass player, [Steven] was a metal drummer. He became the best punk rock drummer ever."
