Guns 'n' Roses closed the epic Rock In Rio festival last night with a few classics murdered by Axl's new lineup (or his weathered vocal cords).
Axl Rose, who in a yellow raincoat and rainhat, looked like some perverse combination of street flasher and Paddington Bear, screamed like an old lady, threw his microphone around his waist, and caterwauled like a strangled cat. How could this be the singer who (deservedly) has been called "definitely one of the greatest rock & roll singers ever"?
Sure, Bumblefoot is a great player, as are the rest of the new (hired) Guns. But when you measure it up against the band at their original peak ... something is missing.
Last night's disastrous show is in stark contrast to the band's epic performance 20 years ago, where a young and long-johns-clad Axl Rose stood alongside brothers in arms Slash, Izzy and Matt Sorum and broke the heart out of every fan in the place with a show they'll never forget.
