Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted rejoined the band onstage for their 30th anniversary concert series this week at San Francisco's Fillmore Theatre.
Newsted, who spent 14 years with Metallica before quitting in 2011, performed two songs with the band, Harvester Of Sorrow and Damage Inc. - in what was one of many special moments for this unique series of shows, which fans from all over the world attended via a fan club lottery.
According to Rolling Stone, the first 'party' of Metallica's four night, 30th anniversary series this week ran for six hours and featured not only a three hour performance by the band, but guest appearances from fellow musicians and a 'Name That Riff' game show for the fans that flew from all over the world to be there.
In another unforgettable moment for Metallica fans, Cliff Burton's father Ray taking the stage to share stories about Cliff's days in the band before before the tragic bus crash that claimed one of rock's finest songwriters.
On the inspiration behind the band's seminal debut, Kill 'Em All, Cliff's dad shared Cliff's take on the title. "[Cliff] got the idea for Kill 'Em All, as in kill all the managers!" Ray joked, adding that things changed when they shifted to their current managers, Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch, who have been with the band since 1984.
Metallica are set to tour Europe in 2012, playing Europe's Download Festival alongside a reunited Black Sabbath.
