Was Dave Grohls Involvement With QOTSA A Foo Fighters Escape Plan?

The band finally opens up after 14 years

Image: Dave Grohl

Rock’N’roll radlord Dave Grohl has finally revealed the motivation for his involvement with Queens Of The Stone Age.

The singer, guitarist, drummer genius played drums on QOTSA 2002 release ’Songs For The Deaf’, according the frontman Josh Homme it was a very last minute decision to have Grohl involved; “I called Dave and said, 'Can you come right now?' It was noon and he said, 'I'll be there at 6:30 PM. By 8 PM, we had already tracked a few songs."

Grohl, having been a long time fan of Homme jumped at the chance, even though Grohl was busy working on the Foo Fighters hit record ‘One By One'.

As reported by Ulimate-Guitar, Fooey’s guitarist Chris Shiflett talked about the tense phase for the band.

On being back on drums Grohl enjoyed the change of pace, telling Fade "It's a nice change of pace. Not being in the spotlight is kinda nice. It's really about just playing the drums. I feel much more comfortable and confident doing this than trying to sing every night.”

Watch Dave Grohl with Queens Of The Stone Age:

Moving from the tense situation, after playing with QOTSA, Shiflett said; "I think playing with QOTSA definitely influenced his enthusiasm and motivation. I think musically he would have been influenced by them anyway because he's listened to them since he was a Kyuss fan - he's always been into that band”.

It seems drumming with Grohl’s favourite band could have been a getaway plan from the limelight that comes with Foo Fighters.

Higgo’s Corner 13

Triple M's Higgo throws up three Aussie bands he's loving right now

Hey legends, thanks for the great feedback on this column, it’s bloody awesome when someone writes and tells me they’ve become of a fan of a band after reading about them here. Aussie music is thriving, especially in the heavier realm and this first band is doing something REALLY special.

They’re called Kill : Death : Ratio, and here’s what it says on their facebook page Kill : Death : Ratio are foregoing the traditional album method and option for a new approach. All our music will be FREE. We will be aiming to release a steady stream of content in the form of 1-2 songs every month or two with accompanying video content.

This is a great approach in my opinion. Rather than having to wait for an entire album, you can get it track by track, for free, as they make it. To be fair, if the production values were poor, and the tunes sub par, you wouldn’t really give a stuff, but let me assure you, this band, “born from the ashes of retired Anarion” is THE BUSINESS. If you like Aussie bands like Teramaze and Damnations Day, you’ll dig Kill : Death : Ratio.
It’s metal, a bit prog, clean vocals, thick drums and bass, crunching guitars and wailing solos. This band has quickly become a favourite of mine, and I think more people need to hear them. Talent personified. The musicianship really is that good. Get in on the ground floor people, check out their first single “The Distraction Plague” then flip over and watch As The Vulture Stares (an 8+ minute epic that seemingly goes much quicker).
Look out for live shows.

Here’s a name for you; Gay Paris. Not Gay Pariii, it’s Gay Paris. These guys have been around for quite some time now. I first met their guitarist, Lachlan Marks, at Soundwave YEARS ago. He works for Blunt Magazine, we got chatting, he told me about the band, and couldn’t really pin point the sound when I asked him. Curious, I had to suss them out, and bloody hell I’m glad I did, I’ve been a fan ever since.
So how do you pigeon hole a band’s sound that’s basically just ball tearingly good rock and roll? You don’t. All you can do is suggest if you dig bands like Clutch, you’ll dig what they do. Huge ballsy riffs for days. Attitude, harmonies, charisma, satan. This is Gay Paris.
If you’ve never seen them live, DO NOT MISS THEM when they come to your town. Now, go back to their second album and check out Trash Bird At Confessional

Now here’s a genre that’s never been included in this column, and not for any other reason than.. well.. I’m forgetful, so straight up, apologies to Ro, buddy I’ve been meaning to include in this for a while. Ro is the man behind I Built The Sky. It’s a one man instrumental band. Ro is a bit of a guitar freak, and as you’ll hear, he’s handy on programming drums and playing other instruments too. I first found out about I Built The Sky when a mate posted one of his awesome vids on facebook. Since then, I’ve trawled through his facebook and YouTube to find and listen to more and more. He’s garnered a great following through his YouTube channel, and so he bloody should. His work ethic and talents are exceptional and his vids are clever and quite often scene set perfectly using Melbourne as their backdrops. (his video for ‘Stratus’ is a great example of this).

Seriously, aspiring guitarists, lovers of great tunes, both mellow and heavy should really check out his work. He’s managed to develop a style and sound that’s hard to box.

Check out a great clip, and enjoy the scenery of a song he did a couple of years ago, ‘Lacunosus’.

I hope you find something that you dig in this weeks column, and if you think there’s music I need to know about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, higgo@distortion.me

Until next time, Keep It Loud.

Alanis' Baby Bump Pic

Singer also quotes profound words from her 5 year old.

Alanis Morrissette has posted an amazing photo on her Instagram account that shows the singer/songwriter happy and healthy in the later stages of her pregnancy.

Alanis also quoted her five year old son, Ever Imre, in the caption on her Instagram account, which states "you have to be extra gentle around ladies because they are the most helpful people in the world 'cause they make persons."

Gees, profound words from a 5 year old. Get him writing lyrics ASAP!

If you know pregnancies, you can pretty much guess that she looks ready to go in this photo. And, as luck would have it, one week or so later, she did.

Triple M Record Of The Week: Peter Garrett ‘It Still Matters’

Peter Garrett is Triple M's Record Of The Week

Garrett points to the smoldering intent of the final track, It Still Matters, to illustrate the band's potency. "Obviously musicians of this calibre will get to the point pretty quickly, but in this case it was really exciting. By the time you finish mixing you realise it's all there. You've really got to bank those ones when they happen. They don’t come along every day."

Watch the official film clip:

WHAT IS RECORD OF THE WEEK?

The Triple M Record Of The Week is what it says it is…

Each week Triple M selects a song from all the new music being considered for the playlist as the ‘Record of The Week’.

It’s a song we think is going to do big things and we want to give it a head start and feature it on air across the week.

We’ll also get your feedback on it and feature it in the Music Jury.

So far we’ve featured the new Peter Garrett, Blink 182 and Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, as well as the great new songs from UK artist Tom Odell and Canadian 6-piece The Strumbellas…

INXS' Blessing On New Hutch Doco

New documentary expected to capture INXS legend like never before.

Fresh from the news that we have some new Michael Hutchence material courtesy of a Sydney entrepreneur who seems to have ruffled a few feathers, news just out suggests that the remaining members of the band and their long-time manager C.M. Murphy have given official blessing to a new documentary to be made by the legend's long-time friend and director of many of INXS' very best film clips, Richard Lowenstein.

"I have been working on the definitive documentary film journey into the heart and soul of this complex, shy, poetic and exceptionally charismatic man for many years," he said in a statement.

"To be able to embark on this film now with such great partners as UMG (Universal Music Group), UK's Passion Pictures, Ghost Pictures, Chris and INXS is extremely exciting and I know that together we are going to tell this story like no one else can."

The documentary has the backing of the record company, meaning that the documentary is most likely to feature actual INXS music, which would be considered fairly important when telling the life story of one of Oz's truly great frontmen.

"Michael Hutchence was a musical genius who led one of the world's biggest bands to global stardom, only to succumb to a tragic end," said David Blackman, Universal Music Group's head of film and television development, in a statement.

"We have assembled an incredible team that is committed to telling Michael's story and providing the world with a portrait of a man who left behind an enduring musical and cultural legacy."

Either way, for fans of INXS and Michael Hutchence, you can look forward to the documentary, expected to land in theatres in late 2017.
