Aussie Navy Called In To Help With NZ Quake Rescue
An Australian warship has been diverted from planned war games off the coast of Auckland, to help out in the worst affected areas after Sunday night's deadly 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
HMAS Darwin is set to arrive off the coast of Kaikoura, on the South Island, tonight. It'll be fully equipped with defence personnel to help airlift stranded families and tourists to safety.
Kaikoura is a small town with just one road in and one road out. Not only in the road literally torn in pieces, but massive land slips on both sides of the township mean access will be limited to air and boat for weeks, if not months.
On board the frigate is its S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter which will help in evacuations, and distributing supplies.
