Dolly Parton's famous Dollywood Theme Park has narrowly avoided going up in smoke, as wildfires swept through parts of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Flames fanned by strong winds licked the doorstep of Dollywood in Tennessee.  The park opened in 1986 after Dolly partnered with a local family.

The wildfires destroyed a resort and forced thousands to pack up and leave their homes.

The latest wildfires spread quickly when trees were blown onto power lines, sparking new fires and spreading embers further.

Parton said she's heartbroken over the fires.

In a statement she said "I am praying for all the families affected by the fire and the firefighters who are working so hard to keep everyone safe".

She added "it is a blessing that my Dollywood theme park, the DreamMore Resort and so many businesses in Pigeon Forge have been spared".
