Different Courses For Coaches Posted by Jason Dunstall 18 June, 2009 - 9:09 PM

Nathan Buckley

Brian from Carlton asks:

Hey Chief,

My wife won't let me go to any footy games. What can I say to her so I can go? Brian.

C'mon Brian,

Are you a man or a mouse!! Stand up for your rights and explain to your no doubt lovely wife that you need to relax and unwind on weekends and the footy is the perfect way to do this. If that doesn't work, bribery has always been a successful method of temptation. Presents, flowers. dinners or outings would seem a pretty fair trade-off. If that doesn't work then throw yourself at the mercy of the court. Beg, whine, cry and moan until she can take it no more and is relieved to get you out of the house. If all of the above fails, disregard everything I've said and simply accept life as it has been dealt to you because I'm sorry to say it but you are completely and utterly whipped my boy!!!

Good luck

Chief.

P.s If your wife cracks it completely then you and I have never communicated. I have never heard of you!

Timmy from The Hills asks:

G'day big Chieftain. How is it possible that Buckley can get a walk-up start to a job without any experience? Seems crazy that blokes like Voss needn't have served an apprenticeship...

Timmy,

I agree with you whole-heartedly but the short term success of Michael Voss in his first season (7-5) means Buckley is now a certainty to follow the same path. The profiles and reputations of some of the biggest names in the game like Buckley and Voss tend to encourage clubs to take educated risks re their capacity to step straight into the top job. Time will tell how educated these risks are.

Cheers
Chief.

Jeff from Ascot Vale asks:

Hey Chief,

Do you think North have done the right thing? Not sure that Dean left of his own choice, but what is done and will we find someone better to coach us.  What's your thoughts on North?

Jeff,

I think Dean has done a sensational job with the resources at his disposal over the last 6-7 years. The time however might suit both parties re a change. North have a lot of challenges ahead of them in terms of list management and a vibrant new coach will need to leave emotion at the door to address those. It's a big job that I don't believe will bear fruit for a few years but the benefit is in the long term. Dean won't have any issues with his future, I'm sure he will be in demand for a number of different roles in football.

Cheers
Chief.
