The Chief Doubts The Hawks Can Make Finals
Jason Dunstall 3 July, 2009 - 10:55 AM
The Hawks have stopped singing and even The Chief of Hawthorn has lost faith and accepts they might not make the finals. See his answer below for Scott...
Wayne Maher a Western Bulldogs fan asks:
Every year at split round time, The Western Bulldogs come back a very different team. As a member i fear my team going into a common sight of sloppy lazy play with many losses ahead. This is something that has happened many times over the years. Even in 1997. The team just seems to go off. I think
2007 was a bad case of this. Last year it happened.
My question is why does this happen? And have there been any indications it won’t happen this year?
Wayne,
Sometimes the mid-season break can come when a team would prefer to keep playing i.e. when they have momentum. Unfortunately it is not an optional or flexible weekend off. Rest assured though that the club would be fully aware of the loss of momentum in past seasons and will endeavour to take steps to ensure it doesn't happen again this year. I certainly don't see any signs that might indicate the Bulldogs are heading for a slump.
Cheers
Chief.

Scott Harrison from St.Kilda asks:
Hey Chief. My second team is Hawthorn. After last Saturday night’s capitulation to the Eagles, I’ve lowered my expectations from Final 4 to Final 8. Am I being overly optimistic?
Scott,
I think we are all hopeful that the Hawks will still make the eight. I daresay though that it was a fair enough assessment to forget about a top four finish and just worry about winning enough games to make the finals. It will still take an enormous effort to win 6 of the last 9.
Fingers crossed

Emily Crosthwaite a Carlton supporter asks:
Hi Jason. Did the AFL help create a monster in 2005 when they allowed Barry Hall to play in the Swan’s GF? It’s evident that they sent a clear message that he could throw punches (at Matt Maguire in that case) and still be given the all clear to play on. Surely Hall’s continued contempt for the rules must in some way be based on the AFL’s precedent that, as a Swan, different rules apply to him? Em.
Emily,
Like you and many others, I believe Barry Hall was exceptionally lucky to play in the '05 p'ship. How he wasn't rubbed out for the Maguire incident was beyond me, perhaps only the AFL know the real reason! Nevertheless he has transgressed too many times over too long a period to attribute his flagrant abuse of the rules to one infringement. I suggest the end is nigh for Big Bad Barry.

Greg Holdsworthy an Essendon fan asks:
As a Dons supporter, I was really disappointed in McVeigh's off-field behaviour - and in some ways I can understand the one-match suspension. But is there a better way to punish players that doesn't also hurt the team's chances of winning?
Greg,
It's a dilemma that many clubs have had to face mate. Why penalise the rest of the team, the club and its supporters? Unfortunately a fine in times such as these is ineffective and inappropriate. Sometimes there is a need to reinforce the desired culture and expected behaviour standards of a club to set the right example, especially when it is a young impressionable list like Essendon.

Noel Glynn from Woodville asks:
Have Port Adelaide made the wrong decision in getting Mark Williams to continue as coach. They aren't going great guns this year and should fans expect more of the same?
Noel,
I'm probably thinking along the same lines as you are...the time seemed right for a change, for both parties involved too. However, Williams is a p'ship coach and there is no point replacing someone if you don't think you can land a better candidate for the job. Perhaps it's a case of better the devil you know...
