Jim's Man Crush, Round 7 - 2009
James Brayshaw 12 May, 2009 - 4:06 PM
Simon Black. There's your MVP for round 7, simple as that.
I have always been a massive fan of the way this young man goes about playing football. His work ethic is unbelievable, he has made a career out of making players around him better and his resume is astounding. Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, multiple best and fairest's and three premierships.
On Saturday against Richmond he was sensational. After quarter time he and Luke Power smashed the Tigers through the middle and pretty much the game was over from there.
Anyone who aspires to play mid-field at AFL level should make it a point to get to the venue the Lions are next playing at and do nothing more than watch Simon Black for the whole game. Observe what he does when he doesn't have the ball, the incredible position running that often goes unrewarded, the physical toll the repeated hits take on him and how he gets up and boxes on when clearly knackered.
That's what elite onballers do in this competition and Simon has been elite for the best part of a decade.
Never overly quick anyway, injuries have brought him back to the field pace wise, but he more than makes up for it with hardness, sheer workload and sublime skill by foot and hand. The way he delivers the pill inside 50 to Brown and Bradshaw is without peer.
With the focus so regularly on Ablett, Judd etc, Simon Black is often overlooked when the best are discussed. Not sure it would bother him much but when this man retires he will take with him one of the most complete careers a midfielder has ever put together.
Fantastic on Saturday, fantastic for as long as he's been a league footballer and for that Simon Black is my Triple MVP.

Mick J says
Jonathan Brown was pretty good to James. He would be a given at any other team at the moment. Wished he had never left Victoria in the first place.
