Triple M Footy's Jay-Z Clark is reporting that Hawthorn champion Jordan Lewis has officially requested to be traded to Melbourne.
Earlier on Monday, Jay-Z told Triple M that Lewis would be joining Melbourne by the end of the day.
In a move that would’ve been unthinkable a week ago, Lewis, who was touted as Hawthorn’s next captain, will cross to AAMI Park.
Jay-Z said Lewis was “dead-set keen” to head over to Melbourne and that chiefs from both clubs will finalise the deal later on Monday.
It sounds like the Dees will only have to give up a late pick, either 66 or 84, or a fringe player to acquire the services of Lewis.
Melbourne are “over the moon” to recruit Lewis, according to Jay-Z.
Jay-Z reported last week that Lewis headed into a meeting with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson thinking they would be discussing the possibility of him captaining the side next year.
Instead, Lewis was “shocked” after Clarkson asked him to consider playing at another club in season 2017. The meeting left Lewis furious and wanting out.
Lewis is an all-time great of the Hawthorn Football Club, having played 264 games, won four premierships, a best-and-fairest and an All-Australian jumper.
The 30-year-old is the second champion to depart Hawthorn this trade period, with five-time best-and-fairest Sam Mitchell joining West Coast on Friday.
Mitchell and Lewis finished first and second respectively in the club’s best-and-fairest this year and were also Hawthorn’s leading contested ball winners for 2016.
Hawthorn have been very active with Brad Hill (Fremantle) also leaving Waverley Park.
The Hawks have picked up Tom Mitchell (Sydney) and Ty Vickery (Richmond) and are trying to facilitate a trade that sees them recruit Gold Coast’s Jaeger O’Meara.
Billy Hartung, Brendan Whitecross, Jonathan O’Rourke, James Sicily and Luke Breust have all been touted as potential trade bait at different times to make the O’Meara deal happen.
