Collingwood president Eddie McGuire admitted on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast that uncertainty still surrounded the nature of the roles that Mick Malthouse and Nathan Buckley will play at the club next season.

Listen to Eddie explain the situation to The Hot Breakfast (6m 57s):

Buckley is due to take over the coaching reins from Malthouse at the end of this season as part of the transition-of-power agreement that was struck by Collingwood in 2009.

As part of the agreement, Malthouse was due to take on a director-type role that would oversee the coaching department.

But with less than three months left in the season, Malthouse’s role beyond 2011 has still not been defined.

And while Eddie is confident of retaining Malthouse’s services, he said there are no guarantees the triple premiership coach would fulfil his part of the deal.

“I have no doubt that Mick Malthouse will be at Collingwood next year in the role as director of football (but) there’s nothing 100 percent certain in life,” Eddie told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

“The roles of what the director of football and what the senior coach look like are evolving ... I believe the roles to be essential for where our club is going and the way football’s going in the future.”

“(It’s still unclear as to) what are the exact roles on a day-to-day (basis and) who has the final say on different things. That’ll be worked through.”

But Eddie insisted that Buckley would be ‘running the show’ next season.

“Let there be no mistake, the senior coach is the senior coach,” Eddie told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

“Nathan Buckley is running the show next year, so that’s that from a coaching point of view.”

The Collingwood president also denied that Malthouse's personality rendered him incapable of taking a back seat to his protege after potentially coaching the Magpies to back-to-back premierships.

“He’s been a great supporter of Nathan Buckley, they had a wonderful partnership as coach and captain over the duration so I’ve got no worries about any of that,” Eddie said.

Will Malthouse stay at Collingwood next year? If so, will the Buckley-Malthouse partnership work?
