Former Western Bulldogs champ Luke Darcy has described Matthew Boyd’s appointment as the Doggies’ new captain as ‘an unbelievable story’ on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.

Boyd was announced on Friday morning as the replacement for the Dogs’ all-time games record-holder Brad Johnson (364) who retired at the end of last year after 17 seasons – six of which he spent as skipper.

It capped off a remarkable journey for Boyd who was playing in the reserves for VFL side Frankston before being rookie-listed by the Bulldogs in 2002 and is now one of the AFL’s elite midfielders.

“It’s a great appointment and a fantastic story ... he is just unbelievably competitive and professional,” said Darcy who played 226 matches for the Doggies.

And Darcy highlighted that Boyd’s appointment was even more admirable given the calibre of candidates he beat for the job.

“They’ve got some good talent,” Darcy said of the Bulldogs.

“Daniel Giansiracusa would have been really close, Robert Murphy is around the mark, Adam Cooney (as well), so they had a fair bit to choose from.”

“Ben Hudson also will be in the leadership group.”

Is Matthew Boyd the right man for the Bulldogs captaincy?

    Well Done Boydy,
This is a true rags to riches story of a great guy and great leader at the Bulldogs. Kudos to Scotty Clayton for seeing something buried deep in the VFL that no one else saw!
