600 Reasons Why Mick Malthouse Still Rocks Post by: Hamish McLachlan 22 June, 2009 - 4:23 PM
1. The Pies are Getting Warmer - Might be involved in the FoursomeThe Pies are starting to get to an edible temperature. Into the 4 with another bit of 'roadkill' and they have got a little bit of mojo at the moment. The two 'D's - Didak and Davis - are flying on field and the big 'D' off it is in their favour... the draw - it's delicious - 7 left at the MCG and 2 at the Dome.
They will be very hard to handle when it comes to September, and given their draw, form and injury list, I reckon they will finish top 4 and get a double chance, and Melbourne finals. If either of the top 2 falter, maybe the Pies might find themselves playing on the last Saturday in September.
2. Lloydie 1000 Bound?
Matty Lloyd - great bloke and great player. Kicked 3 on Friday night to make his AFL tally 915 goals - a remarkable effort. 3 time Coleman Medalist - he drew level with the great Leigh Matthews as the 7th highest goal kicker of all time.
Think he will play on and reckon if he can kick 30 more this season, he can get 55 next year and retire with 1000 next to his name.
3. Cats Not Exactly Purring
You know I love my Cats, but it has been a few nervous weeks watching the Pussies. I know, I know, I know. 12 and zip. It's great, but... we have only just been getting to the line. Brad Johnson missed after the siren in round 9 and should have sunk us, Eagles had us on the ropes in round 11 and then the Dockers let us off the hook yesterday.
Moons is off line, Chappy unusually so too, and LBJ was marked harder than a year 12 maths exam yesterday. Still, we won. Thank God for Byrnes' 5! The Power this weekend... we should be fine there, surely... but then it's the Rd 14 "Shake and Bakeathon". Make sure you are listening to Triple M when LBJ and the boys take on the Saints! It will be huuuuuuge.
4. Smiling Mick... 600 Games and Counting
Unusual to see Mick and his pearly whites. We saw them on Saturday night. He coached his 600th VFL/AFL game - had a win - and then had his grand daughter in the rooms in his arms singing the team song. Smiling and singing. Weird. What a career - he has been yelling at players and the media for 26 years... wow - I have only been alive for 33. Well done and congratulations Mick.
5. Buckley to become Lord Mayor or a Kangaroo?
Who knows, but Nathan Buckley is going to get very very tired of the media very soon.
He is in the US at the moment learning tricks from the US Coaching Schools... he is probably pretty pleased he isn't around this week. Reckon he will be offered a few roles pretty soon - Tigers, Kangaroos, Notre Dame, Australian Cricket Coach, Lord Mayor, Prime Minister, Host of Dancing with the Stars... looking forward to hearing which way he goes, and hoping he succeeds.
There will be a lot of pressure on him - although he is used to that - and no one will be putting more pressure on him than himself. He is a perfectionist. Really really tough on himself. Come and watch touch footy on Tuesday nights in Albert Park to get a feel for how intense he is. Hope he chooses the Lord Mayor role - will be awesome for the city. He is a star.

Get Leig Matthews back, we traded him to Brisbane so we could get Bucks. Now it's time to get him back again. I still watch that 1990 DVD over and over again.
