Eddie McGuire's Report

Eddie McGuire's update on the circumstances surrounding John McCarthy's tragic death in Las Vegas on Triple M Melbourne's Hot Breakfast on Wednesday:

"There's a lot of speculation about what's happened, no-one quite knows why John was separated from his group and he'd obviously spoken to his girlfriend on the phone, that's been confirmed, and he was in a distressed state, that he was talking about coming home at that stage," Eddie McGuire said.

"Information I have is that he was walking around in a disused part, infact it was Bugsy Siegel's old apartment of the Flamingo."

"The indications are that he may have jumped at a palm tree and that he's either missed or grabbed the branch and missed it or has pulled through."

"That's the information we're getting at the moment and my information comes form those who I believe have seen the CCTV vision of it."

EARLIER: Disturbing details are emerging about the last hours of John McCarthy as he is remembered by his mates as a friendly, positive guy.

The Port Adelaide player, who was killed after falling from nine metres from the roof of a hotel in Las Vegas, had called his girlfriend Dani Smarrelli not long before his tragic demise.

He was not at his hotel, away from all of the team-mates he was travelling with.

It's also believed he told Smarrelli he wanted to return to Australia and was going to head to the airport. Smarrelli tried to contact McCarthy's Port team-mates in Las Vegas.

Police are reviewing CCTV from the venue and toxicology tests will be conducted on McCarthy's body, the results of which may not be known for weeks. There are no signs of foul play, according to the local coroner.

Triple M's Warren Tredrea says McCarthy was one of the most positive people he has met and says he's never seen a reaction like this to an event from the wider footy community.

Collingwood President Eddie McGuire said Magpies CEO Gary Pert had one of the toughest days of his life breaking the sad news to ex-Magpie McCarthy's former team-mates.

Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas says the death was an enormous shock and a terrible tragedy for McCarthy's family, partner and friends as well as for the club and the wider Port Adelaide community.

"John embraced Port Adelaide and we embraced him, and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his passing," Thomas said.

"He was a very popular player among his team-mates and our supporters. John played 21 of 22 games this season for Port Adelaide and was a valued member of our team who quickly won the respect and friendship of us all."

"He will be greatly missed by everyone at Port Adelaide and we extend our sympathies to his parents Shane and Cath, his brother Matt, sisters Frances, Elizabeth and Jane, his girlfriend Dani and his extended family and network of friends."
