Andrew Johns has been officially recognised as one of rugby league's greatest players with him being inducted as the eighth Rugby League immortal.

Johns received the prestigious award at a black tie Men of League gala dinner, which took place at Doltone House in Pyrmont on Thursday night.

Johns and Mal Meninga were the favourites for the honour, while St George champion Norm Provan and former South Sydney and Sydney Roosters great Ron Coote also on the shortlist.

Johns had a decorated career. He debuted for the Newcastle Knights in 1993 and went on to play 249 first grade games for the club. He won two premierships with the Knights, played 23 games for NSW and 24 tests for Australia.

"Great careers always come down to consistent excellence and longevity,' said Triple M's Peter Sterling.

"Not just longevity, but to be playing as well towards the end of your career as what you did earlier.

"They were consistently excellent from day one. They were dominant players and that's what makes them stand out."

Andrew Johns joins other immortals including the late Arthur Beetson and Clive Churchill, Johnny Raper, Reg Gasnier, Bob Fulton, Graeme Langlands and Wally Lewis.
