NRL Match-Fixing Scandal Explodes Post by: The Grill Team 15 September, 2010 - 9:54 AM

A strong rumour has surfaced on The Grill Team that a number of high profile NRL players, player managers and underworld figures are involved in a match fixing scandal.
As a legend of the game himself, Triple M Sydney's Mark "MG" Geyer said, "it makes me ill," on Tuesday morning on the Grill Team.
"The names that have been mentioned are not just fringe first-graders. These are higher paid players, which makes me wonder why? Why would you risk everything that you are in this game, everything that you know you are about, for money," MG continued.
Initially, it was believed the NRL already knows about the match-fixing ring, but will not act on it until after the Grand Final on October 3. NRL media manager John Brady claimed on the Grill Team on Tuesday the NRL has no knowledge of any syndicate.
"[The NRL] made clear that not only did they know nothing about it, but that the two incidents that they were aware of, 'irregularities' within this year, which was Melbourne Storm for the Spoon, and the Cowboys/Bulldogs game, they'd referred them to the police," Stuart MacGill said on the Grill Team on Wednesday morning.
"The fact of the matter is if anyone was involved in gaming and we could prove that they had done anything to manipulate a result ... football would become a memory," Brady said. Listen to the full interview above.
Ray Murrihy, NSW Racing Steward: Grill Team Interview 16 Sep 2010
The Grill Team spoke to Racing NSW's Chief Steward Ray Murrihy, who gave an update on the current investigation into NRL match-fixing, specifically the Cowboys vs. Bulldogs match. Murrihy has submitted a report to the NRL covering the agencies involved in betting on the match, as well as the CCTV footage of the betting agencies provided.

I think its beyond a disgrace to say the least if any of these blokes have been involved with match fixing. Jail is the minimum at which they should be punished. How dare they try and manipulate the best game in the world. I played Matthews Cup and SG ball over ten years ago now and always wished i could have played first grade. I'm now stuck behind a desk still wishing i could have cracked it. These blokes don't know anything about honour to the NRL.

If I was a punter with a losing ticket on a fixed game ... I would sue those players involved to recover my losses ... Is this possible? Lets hope so! Anyone that fixes a game is SCUM and should be jailed!!

That explains why teams can get beaten by 30 points, and stand amongst the opposition laughing and joking at the end of the game. It seems a large number of the current players do not respect the game or its history. Without rugby league, most of these would struggle to get a job - let alone earn hundreds of thousands of dollars. Once again, the boofheads damage the game and turn away supporters.

Forget the Dragons v Manly 2004...How about the one that just past. I reckon the Ref must have had a bundle on St. George. And a group of us can recall in a State of Origin game a couple years back. A team captain was heard saying "they said, they get one more." and the next set of 6, the other side got a TRY!

mg abosoloutly agree...if it comes down to this and they are found guilty the game should just pack up and let afl become the sport we want to watch n play....money has become to big of an issue for nrl players n 400,000 is just not enough for some...jail terms should be laid out to the dickheads...

I'm not saying that match fixing is not real, or that there isn't heavy influence applied to teams/players etc by unscrupulous people around the game, but in order to truly fix a game, you'd basically have to have AT LEAST half the team in your pocket or more. If you've got that, you've got 7 or 8 players that at some stage will say something to someone. You can't keep this kind of stink down for too long!

This footy season there have been many times when you think 'he's on and off his game' ;how could he go off''

'surely it's exhaustion that made him touch the ball' 'scrum that breaks apart and is let go'. It just goes on and on. How can we ever watch a game again and believe that it's on the level.
Very disappointed fan. -
