You heard it here first, but now it's official. Matt Elliott is the new coach of the New Zealand Warriors!

He's been signed on a two-year contract and will start his role immediately.

Chief executive Wayne Scurrah said “Our ultimate goal will always be to win premierships and, in Matthew, we have secured a coach not only capable of achieving this but also with the skills and vision to build a stronger total football club.”

Scurrah said Elliott, who has a sports science degree, would benefit from the best-resourced football department the Vodafone Warriors have had in their history. “It’s no surprise after watching the NRL’s top two sides Melbourne and the Bulldogs this year that a huge investment in sports science and resourcing is an absolute requirement."

The word from Rugby League insiders is that Matt Elliott will coach New Zealand Warriors for the next 3 seasons.

Since news broke that the offer to coach the club was knocked back by Melbourne Storm's Craig Bellamy, Tim Sheens was among those tipped for the top job, but now but that looks unlikely.

Former Bradford Bulls, Canberra Raiders and Penrith Panthers coach, Matt Elliott was spotted boarding a plane...the deal looks to be almost sealed.

He has considerable NRL experience, having just finished the 2011/12 season alongside Brian Smith at The Roosters. He seems to be a natural fit for the top job

Warriors officials were due to announce a decision within days, or even hours with players scheduled to return to pre-season training in three weeks time.

All the breaking news will be here.
