Swine Flu, Schwine Flu Post by: Dan Ginnane 11 June, 2009 - 9:49 PM
Swine flu, schwine flu.
If Karmichael Hunt, Antonio Winterstein and Ben Hannant were unavailable for the Friday night blockbuster because of hamstring injuries, would there be calls for the game to be called off?
Don’t think so.
It’s a shame the Broncos haven’t had many - if any - training sessions ahead of the Bulldogs clash, but its simply bad luck. During Origin periods clubs like Brisbane struggle to get together for training sessions anyway.
I just wonder whether the Broncos are pushing for a change of timeslot because Sunday afternoons draw a better crowd.
Swine flu has put the nation in a state of confusion, the NRL notwithstanding. Early in the week, Darren Lockyer talked of his concern that Maroons teammate Ben Hannant had contracted the contagious virus. By ‘talked’, I mean he spoke without a face mask to half a dozen journalists, all standing within a metre of the potentially infected Queensland captain.
On medical advice, the league took a stand and withdrew two players from the Gold Coast/Dragons match. Yet the health authorities now seem to be comfortable with the H1N1 positive Karmichael playing against the Dogs.
The goalposts keep moving.
What’s likely is players will keep gradually keep falling under the swine flu spell. It will happen across all codes. If we start postponing games now, we might not have a grand final until Christmas.
Let’s just get on with it.
