Sports Illustrated has named LeBron James as their 2016 Sportsperson of the Year.

James led his Cleveland Cavaliers to a historic win over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA championship back in June, their first title in franchise history.

The win, in which James won the NBA Finals MVP, is generally cited as one of the greatest comebacks in history.

James, following his 2012 win, becomes just the second athlete to take home the award twice after Tiger Woods, and the first basketballer.

Sports Illustrated hands out the award annually to "the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement".
