20 years after watching his very first Tour de France, Aussie Cadel Evans crossed the finish line ahead of the pack, becoming the first Australian ever to win the Tour.

Fantasy or not, Cadel has proved he was capable with Triple M's Greg 'Marto' Martin declaring the win "the greatest individual sporting achievement ever by an Australian".

Hailing from the Northern Territory, Cadel says he was just 14 years old when he first announced his intent to win the Tour de France.

Triple M's Hot Breakfast spoke to Cadel's father Paul Evans this morning who admitted he was relieved, albeit with a hangover, that Cadel won the Tour.

"I wanted him to win because I know he has tried for seven years and he wouldn't be happy within himself if he didn't win it.

"He would have gone again next year, and he might still go again next year and win it again".

Do you think Cadel Evans is Australia's greatest sporting hero?
