Film-maker Danny Boyle's Opening Ceremony in London was a spectacular success, according to a majority of people taking to social media network around the world watching it on TV.

Film-maker Danny Boyle's Opening Ceremony in London was a spectacular success, according to a majority of people taking to social media network around the world watching it on TV.

The ceremony featured a selective, but entertaining, dramatisation of UK history which featured Sir Kennetth Brannagh and it also had a skit with Daniel Craig's James Bond with The Queen - and her corgis.

Chariots Of Fire was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Rowan Atkinson's 'Mr Bean', while Mike Oldfield also had his chance to shine with his axe.

Dizzee Rascal performed an abbreviated live version of 'Bonkers' as part of a catchy mega-mix of the finest music to come out of the UK, including; Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and many more.

Another to perform live was Emili Sande, who sang 'Abide With Me'.

The Athletes came out to music from popular dance acts Underworld and Chemical Brothers, among others.

After the athletes procession, the formalities were carried out before seven young athletes lit the mechanism that lit the flame (see image in photo gallery above).

The torch was delivered to the stadium by Sir Steve Redgrave, who took it from David Beckham after a speedboat ride down a lit-up Thames River.

Paul McCartney also sung Hey Jude live, with a few sound issues, to close out the opener.
