The first annual Cliff Burton Day will be celebrated later this month to honour of the life of Metallica’s legendary late bass player.

Cliff Burton Day will be celebrated on February 10 — Burton’s birthday — each year, following a change.org petition to recognise the date in his hometown of Castro Valley in California.

Metallica announced the news on their Instagram yesterday.

“IT’S OFFICIAL! The Board of Supervisors from Alameda County has just proclaimed February 10, 2018, which would have been Cliff’s 56th birthday, ‘Cliff Burton Day’,” the band said.

“Thanks to all of the fans who got behind this initiative.”

“We’d like to send our appreciation and respect to all of you who continue to honor Cliff in your own personal ways.”

Burton played on Metallica’s first three albums — Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets — before tragically dying in a tour bus crash in Sweden in 1986.

He was also given song writing credit on the track To Live Is To Die on the album …And Justice For All.

The first Cliff Burton day will fall on what would have been his 56th birthday.
