Ringo Starr has been awarded a knighthood for his services to music.

Prince William bestowed the honour on the former Beatles drummer during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, 53 years after he was awarded an MBE with his fellow band members.

Afterwards, Starr told the BBC that he was chuffed to be a "Sir" but that he had missed having the Beatles with him this time around.

"It means a lot actually," he said. "It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this.

"I was a bit shaky on my own."

The 77-year-old's 2018 knighthood ceremony seemed a little smoother sailing than the 1965 one, after which John Lennon claimed the four Beatles were so nervous to meet the Queen that they snuck off to have a cigarette in one of the Palace's bathrooms.

"Who said that?" Starr laughed when quizzed on Tuesday. "I'm not keeping that rumour going."

And as for what he's going to do with his new medal?

"I'll be wearing it at breakfast," he smiled.
