U2 have announced stadium shows in the US and Europe to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the seminal The Joshua Tree album.

The classic, which has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and spawned the hits With or Without You, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and Where the Streets Have No Name, will be played in its entirety as part of the show. This means album songs like Red Hill Mining Town, which they’ve never played live, will be part of the setlist.

The only problem is, there’s a very real possibility that Australia will be left off the travel plan. And Australian U2 fans are taking to online to plead their case to be included.

Both Bono and The Edge made statements on the announcement of the new tour.

The Edge: “It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk… To celebrate the album — as these songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too — we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now. We’re looking forward to it.”

Bono: “Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years… It’s quite an opera. A lot of emotions which feel strangely current, love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarisation … all the greats ... I’ve sung some of these songs a lot … but never all of them. I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are … it’s gonna be a great night. Especially when we play at home. Croke Park. it’s where the album was born, 30 years ago.”

There’s been no word from the band’s Australian promoter as to whether Australia will be included as part of this tour. If not, U2 fans, you might want to start looking for cheap flights to the US and Europe.
