Iconic US rapper, producer and music mogul Dr Dre has lost a trademark court case he brought against a gynecologist known as Dr Drai, after claiming people would confuse the two.

The actual doctor, full name Dr Draion Burch, in addition to being a fully qualified medical practitioner, is a celebrated public speaker and author of several medical books, perhaps most notably '20 Things You Need To Know About The Penis'.

Dre has often referred to penises - among other body parts - in his highly decorated rap career. However, the US Trademark Office considered this was insufficient to cause the general public to confuse the two gentlemen, and have closed the case.

It was not felt that people would confuse the two "doctors" and unknowingly pay for goods or services from one, believing them to be for the other, for example, buying tickets to attend a gangster rap concert featuring Dr Dre, but instead discovering you had attended one of Dr Burch's speeches about gynecology.

Dr Burch, in a memorable line of defence, said his customers were unlikely to mistake one for the other as "Dr Dre isn't a medical doctor."

"Nor is he qualified to provide any type of medical services or sell products specifically in the medical or healthcare industry" - news that could come as a shock to all but the closest followers of the pioneer of West Coast rap and the man behind such songs as 'Straight Outta Compton' and 'Fuck Tha Police'.

While Dr Drai can continue using that name for his books and events, the owner of the Aftermath Entertainment label can take some solace in the fact that he is Still D.R.E.
