Hello! I’ve waited here for you…

"Everlong". It closes the Foo Fighters set more often than not. People get married to the acoustic version (that and "Nothing Else Matters" are the two most popular MMM wedding songs, FYI).

As I write this, I can tell you it’s been played on Triple M 1001 times… hang on, make that 1002. It’s often at the top of our countdowns, the most popular song in the Triple M Club and a firm favourite amongst fans. I can’t kill it from the playlist, for fear of riots and hate mail.

But is it one of the greatest songs of all time?

"Stairway to Heaven" was a piece of filler for Led Zeppelin’s 4th album, and now it’s unimaginable to have a world without it. ‘Imagine’ made the world pause, and listen.

Mick Jagger was in a supermarket queue and when the guy in front of him found out they’d run out of cola he turned around and said ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’. Man, the 70’s were a treasure trove of music.

The Foo Fighters "Everlong" is the greatest song of Generation 90’s.

At its core, "Everlong" is a love song. Not in the way Harrison spoke of his lady love in "Something" or "Here Comes The Sun" (sidebar, I wish George Harrison wrote more. I truly believe he was the best Beatle). It’s about forbidden, painful and damaging love. The kind that is so bad for you but you just…can’t…not.

Dave’s first marriage was crumbling, he was involved with Veruca Salt’s Louise Post. You get the sense he knew it was doomed but just wanted to live in the now.

Don’t let the classic, quirky Fooey’s video fool you. This is someone’s soul, laid bare. In fact it took the acoustic, stripped back version of the song to reveal its true meaning.

I have a theory about what makes a great song. It’s simple: no matter how many times you’ve heard a song, if it’s great – you never get tired of it.

And I’m never tired of "Everlong".

#1003.
