Australian rock icon George Young has passed away at the age of 70.

He was a member of the seminal Australian rock group The Easybeats in the 1960s after coming across to Australia from his native Scotland with younger brothers Malcolm and Angus. 

The brothers went on to form Aussie rock behemoth AC/DC, with George briefly playing bass and doing significant production work with them.

Young famously co-wrote the song Friday On My Mind with The Easybeats in 1966, and is considered one of the most influential men in Australian rock.

The song is considered the first worldwide Australian hit, and was voted the best Australian song of all time by an APRA panel in 2001.

Young formed a potent partnership with Easybeats bandmate Harry Vanda, helping produce several AC/DC albums and writing songs for John Paul Young including the hit Love Is In The Air.
