In a year where we've celebrated some of the big albums of the '80s, there wasn't much bigger than INXS' 1987 masterpiece, KICK. It represents a peak time for a band that took on the world from Australia, and won.

Peak Chart Positions:

  • Australia: 1

5 Things You Might Not Know About KICK?

  1. The album was written entirely by Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence (except for their cover of The Loved One), the first time in the band's history that only two members contributed to the writing. Legend has it that Farriss and Hutchence approached the band with the idea, confident in their abilities to produce the hit songs that would take them to the next level. They were right.
  2. Track 6 on the album, The Loved One, is a cover of a '60s song by an Aussie band called The Loved Ones. It was the second time the band had recorded the song, the first being back in the early '80s.
  3. Need You Tonight would become the band's first US number one single. Surprisingly, it would be the only single to hit the coveted number 1 spot in the US, although many of their singles got close.
  4. In 1988, the band cleaned up at the MTV Awards, winning 5 golden spacemen, due pretty much to the aforementioned Need You Tonight. The band worked closely with their mate Richard Lowenstein, who directed most of the film clips for Kick, including Guns In The Sky, New Sensation, Need You Tonight, Mediate, Mystify and Never Tear Us Apart.
  5. Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly recently revealed on their Oztober Show on Triple M, that it was Andrew Farriss who played the guitar solo on the closing track Tiny Daggers. Listen in below.

Living It Live

Considering how many live shows they put on after the release of KICK, there's lots of stuff to choose from. We can't go past this performance in California circa 1988. An enthusiastic American crowd watching an Aussie band in the form of their life.
