John Butler Trio has announced a history-making Australian tour, teaming up with Missy Higgins for a string of dates in the new year.

The Coming Home Tour will reunite John and Missy for their first national tour together in close to 15 years; having won their first ARIA Awards for Best Male and Best Female in 2004 and 2005 respectively and later sharing their first Rolling Stone cover, the pair's careers have always been closely intertwined.

Speaking about the tour, Missy said that she was looking forward to getting "back on the road" with John and his band, who have expanded to a five-piece for the tour.

"I have great memories of all those gigs I did with him when I was first starting out and it will be great to play some really special venues together again after all these years," she added.

The tour will coincide with John Butler Trio's first album in four years, Home, which includes new single Just Call - a song John had been working on for 13 years.

"This album is my most personal work yet and it feels like taking it on the road to connect with fans directly is the final act of delivering this body of work," he said.

Tickets are on-sale from 12pm Friday September 21, with pre-sales available from Frontier Touring next Wednesday September 19.
