The great INXS instrumentalist, Kirk Pengilly, has raised almost $230,000 from an auction featuring some of the instruments he used to create that magic INXS sound we all know and love.

The auction, held at Sotheby's in Sydney, saw many of the instruments used by Pengilly on some of THE INXS albums that took them to superstardom, go to new owners.

The albums? How's everything in-between The Swing through to Welcome To Wherever You Are.

The signature item in the collection - a 1964 Fender L‐Series Stratocaster ‘Candy Apple Red’ guitar, sold for $42K, just shy of the maximum expected.

Other highlights from the sale included:

  • The baritone saxophone used on the recording of Bitter Tears nearly tripled the low estimate and realised $21,960
  • A 1986 Westone Pantera X300 electric guitar sold for $8,540. This is the guitar Pengilly used to record the unmistakable rhythm riff in one of INXS's biggest ever hits, New Sensation

It's fair to say Pengilly is probably cracking a nice bottle of bubbly today, as is a group of eager Aussie musicians.
