Lars Ulrich Reckons Metallica Can Keep Going For Another “20, 25 Years”

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says the band still has decades in front of it, despite some of their contemporaries calling it quits.

Ulrich spoke to Philadelphia’s 93.3 WMMR backstage at a concert last week, and said Metallica has no plans to slow down.

“A lot of people are retiring, and we feel very energised and rejuvenated. I mean, we wanna go long,” Ulrich said.

“We hope we can get another 20, 25 years out of Metallica.

“I don’t know what it’s gonna look like, I don’t know what it’s gonna sound like, but that’s in our heads.”

Lars and bassist Rob Trujillo are both 54, while James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett are 55, meaning they could be looking at still playing nearly into their 80s if Ulrich is right.

“We’re not sitting there thinking retirement or this or that, we’re sort of more the opposite,” Ulrich said.

“So I would say, for us, everything we do is kind of a long game.

”And back then (when Metallica started), when you were 17, you only think of, like, the next five minutes. ‘Where is the next beer? Whoo!’ So that’s kind of different mentality nowadays.”

Ulrich said that watching the younger generation of music fans get into their stuff has kept them inspired.

“There’s more younger kids at our shows than I can ever remember. Half the audience is under 20,” he said.

“And it also feels more like it’s 50-50 between boys and girls now.”
