Molly Meldrum reckons that beloved Australian music show Countdown could be making a comeback.

Meldrum, who hosted the show during its 13-year run, told Studio 10 that a revival could be on the cards, although he would be handing over presenting duties.

"There is a possibility there will be a new Countdown," he said. "All young performers, all young presenters.

"It'll hopefully be in the same timeslot, 6-7 on the Sunday night, repeated on the Saturday.

"I think we need it now."

While Meldrum didn't say exactly when we could expect to see Countdown back on our screens, it's believed that it would once again air on the ABC, more than 30 years after the final episode in 1987.
