Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb have been knighted by the Queen in New Year Honours.

Sir Ringo — who was knighted under his real name Richard Starkey — was awarded the honour for his services to music.

His knighthood comes 20 years after the same honour was awarded to Sir Paul McCartney.

Sir Barry was knighted for his services to music and charity.

Sir Ringo was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a Beatle in 1988 and again in 2015 for his solo work.

Author Michael Morpurgo was also knighted, while Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell has been made a dame.
