Music streaming company Spotify is being sued for US$1.6 billion (AU$2 billion) for copyright infringement, according to the ABC.

US company Wixen Music Publishing alleges that over 10,000 of their songs were streamed or downloaded via Spotify’s app without a licence.

Wixen is the licensee of more than 50,000 songs from artists like The Black Keys, Audioslave and Tom Petty.

"While Spotify has become a multi-billion-dollar company, songwriters and their publishers, such as Wixen, have not been able to fairly and rightfully shares in Spotify's success," Wixen stated in documents filed at the United States District Court.

Spotify claims to have more than 30 million songs and over 140 million active users.

Spotify paid US$43 million (AU$55 million) to settle a class action claim from a group of American songwriters in May.
