Melbourne's iconic Festival Hall could be demolished to make way for a $65 million apartment complex.

A planning proposal has been lodged with Melbourne City Council for two apartment towers - one 16 storeys tall - shops and an office space at the site of the boxing stadium turned concert hall.

The redevelopment plan includes demolition of most of the hall but the retention of the Dudley Street facade, the boxing ring and stage.

The venue was built in 1915 and hosted some of the world's best bands, from Foo Fighters, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to more recent acts such as Liam Gallagher, Gang of Youths, Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys.

"Some of the greatest bands that have ever come through our great rock and roll music-loving city have played at the great Festival Hall, and now there are plans to demolish it and turn it into apartments," Wil Anderson said on Triple M's Hot Breakfast.

"Because the one thing we all know we need more of in the city of Melbourne is apartments!

"We don't need more venues for big live music acts, we need more apartments and retail spaces!"
