Weezer will release a new album in May this year, front man Rivers Cuomo has confirmed.

Cuomo revealed the plans for the new record — titled The Black Albumin an interview with the ABC, saying that it was initially planned to drop as a sequel to 2016’s The White Album.

Cuomo said that the album that became last year’s Pacific Daydream just ended up manifesting quicker than The Black Album.

"We just weren’t quite ready [to drop The Black Album] and this other album kind of materialised,” Cuomo said.

“I had two folders on my Dropbox: one was The Black Album, and it didn’t get filled as quickly as this other folder, which I temporarily titled ‘New Folder.’

“That one filled up with 10 songs that were definitely different, but not quite as different as The Black Album.

“So we put a name on it — Pacific Daydream — and put that out first.”

Cuomo said that The Black Album will drop on May 25.

The Black Album will be Weezer’s 12th studio record, and their fifth with a colour themed name following 1994’s Blue Album, 2001’s Green Album, 2008’s Red Album and 2016’s White Album.
