The number of people claiming dole payments in Adelaide's northern suburbs has been on the rapid increase, with more than 2000 living between Elizabeth South and Andrews Farm claiming benefits payments in the past five years — more than any other part of the state.
As reported in The Advertiser this morning, an additional 2129 people went on the dole in the northern suburbs, claiming annual unemployment benefits worth more than $53 million.
The Federal government is working closely with Nick Xenophon in supporting welfare reforms, including drug testing and harsher penalties for dole recipients who don't turn up to job interviews.
Senator Xenophon said that he still hadn't decided on supporting the drug testing of dole recipients.
“Some of the measures may be counter-productive,” he said.
“The government’s intentions are good, it’s a question of how you best achieve them.”
