A man has been fined $800 for vandalizing a sand sculpture on Australia Day this year.

Police have closed the case after a witness statement led to the arrest and conviction of a 23-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to criminal damage in Albany Magistrate’s Court last month.

The community had admired sculptor Tim Darby painstakingly carve a pile of sand into a pair of impressive whales in the days leading up to Australia Day, with the grand unveiling to happen as part of the City of Albany's annual community event.

City of Albany events staff were devastated to find the sculpture destroyed when they arrived on site early on Australia Day morning, but the community rallied to help build a replacement sand sculpture within a few hours.
