The expected wind change has helped firefighters in their battle of a fire just outside of Albany.

A bushfire WATCH AND ACT has now been issued for south of Down Road Nature Reserve, west of Corio Road and Rutherford Road, north of Lower Denmark Road, Broke Inlet and Lake Powell Nature Reserve and east of Mowforth Road continuing up to the Down Road Nature Reserve in Marbelup.

The fire is now burning back on itself with the change of wind, which happened just after 1am.

Homes in Lloyd Road, Marbelup Road and Rutherwood Road north of Lloyd Road are now no longer under threat of the fire for the moment.

On Wednesday, the fire began at the intersection of Marbelup North Road and South Coast Highway just before 3pm.

A temporary evacuation centre has been set up at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre on Barker Road, Albany.

Only essential items can be taken into these centres, however there is a field available for pets and horses.

South Coast Highway is closed in both directions at Marbelup Road North, and Marbelup Road is also closed.
